A busy week for the PGA leading up to the Open Championship next weekend. There are two events this weekend. I have already released my preview of the Scottish Open, which can be viewed here…
Scottish Open 2023 - Picks & Preview
The second event taking place this weekend is the Barbasol Championship, an alternate event with an extremely weak field, but I think there are some great opportunities to make some money in this field… Let’s get into it.
Tournament Information:
The Barbasol Championship debuted in 2015, where the first 3 editions of this event were held at the Grand National course of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Opelika, northeast of Auburn. In 2018 the event moved to Kentucky to the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, south of Lexington, making it the first PGA Tour event held in the state of Kentucky since 1959, excluding major tournaments.
This week the Barbasol Championship will be an alternate event, being played at the same time as the Scottish Open, where the majority of the golfers competing in the Open Championship are. The field for this event is extremely weak, but should provide some good betting opportunities, as there isn’t a heavy favorite in this event.
Detailed Scorecard:
Course Information:
Keene Trace golf club is a medium length tour course that has no defense from tour quality golfers. The course features fairly wide fairways, and massive greens to shoot at. Keene Trace Golf Club is one of the easier courses played on the tour every year. The Barbasol Championship typically sees hot humid conditions, and plays very soft and receptive, prime conditions for a birdie fest.
The course consists of 4 par 3’s all playing over 180+ yards, and 4 par 5’s with the longest playing at 573 yards, creating a par 72 layout that is very gettable. I have identified some key statistics to look for below, but this course is very standard, fairways & proximity to the hole on approach will be the most important part of the game this weekend, and whoever wins will be the guy who gets hot with the flat stick will be the winner.
Key Statistics:
