Tee times are out for the first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic that is being held at the Detroit Golf Club this weekend in Detroit, Michigan. I have already broken down the course, and my favorite bets of the weekend at the link below, if anyone is interested in that…

Rocket Mortgage Classic (2023) - Picks & Preview

But today I want to talk about three different groups that I think have a clear front runner, two of these guys I have already touched on in the preview I linked about, but I love their chances to get off to a good start so I am going to double dip here. Let’s break it down…

Round 1 3-Ball: J.J Spaun (+125) v. Cameron Champ v. Tyler Duncan

Spaun is one of the guys I have bet one for the full weekend, I took him to finish inside the top 40 and sprinkled on the outright price. You can check out the preview I linked above for more information on why I am high on Spaun this weekend.

But as for this grouping, Spaun ranks No.22 on the PGA Tour in round one scoring average whereas Champ ranks No.173 and Duncan ranks No.136 in that category. These guys have an early tee time on Thursday, starting at 7:18 EST.

There is another massive gap between Spaun and these two guys in early round scoring average as well, with Spaun ranking No.33, Champ ranking No.188 and Duncan ranking No.133.

Spaun has been a little inconsistent recently, but still has three top 30 finishes in his last six starts and he has never finished outside of the top 40 at this event. Champ has only made three cuts in his last 12 starts, and Duncan has missed five straight. I love Spaun this weekend, and I think he gets off to a better start than these two golfers.

Round 1 3-Ball: Byeong Hun An (+110) v. Russell Knox v. Harry Hall

Hun An is the other guy I have bets on for the entire weekend, I have his top 40 and outright as well, so again… there is more information on why I like his game this weekend in the preview linked above.

This is a group I am labelling as a two man race. Knox has struggled in the first round of events this season, and has struggled in rounds where he had an early tee time, as these guys do on Thursday.

As for the other two, they both rank inside the top 25 on tour in first round scoring average, and early round scoring average, and have both played some decent golf recently. But I think the difference maker on Thursday will be each guy's experience on the course. Hun An has played in this event twice totaling eight rounds on this course, whereas Hall will be playing his first tournament round at Detroit Golf Club this Thursday morning.

Hun An is the better approach player of the two, and I think he will have an even bigger advantage on approach knowing the course, while Hall will still be partially learning the course, and having to hit into these small greens at Detroit Golf Club.

Round 1 3-Ball: Scott Stallings (+110) v. Martin Laird v. Andrew Landry

Stallings is a guy I was really close to throwing a top finisher bet at, but just couldn’t get there due to his recent horrific performances. However, Stallings has played in this event all four years, and has never missed the cut at Detroit Golf Club, finishing inside the top 40 three years in a row, while finishing T10 last year at this event.

Luckily Stallings recent performances shouldn’t be much of a factor here and Laird and Landry have been just as bad, and both of these guys haven’t made the cut at this event in two straight years.

Stallings has a massive distance advantage on both of these guys, which makes this course so much easier. It’s pretty evident that this course fits his game and his eye, so I am willing to gamble that he will have a better start to the week than these two guys that have struggled to get anything going at this venue.
