The RSM marks the last full event on the 2022 calendar year, although there are two more smaller events in the coming weeks, this is the last full field we will get to break down before the PGA Tour takes a break through the month of December.

Being the last full event, naturally it comes with a weaker field, but this event will be played at the stunning Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia, and there is a bunch of interesting names in the field, let’s break it down.

Past Winners Playstyle Comparison

Over the past five years, we haven't seen a big name win this event, but there are some similarities between these past winners. All of these guys would be

considered more of the ball striking type.

Obviously to win a PGA Event you have to play well, but the past five winners at this course have had to play well in every aspect of the game. All have been around

+0.0 strokes gained or higher in all the major SG categories, but where the winners have really excelled is with the putter and approaching the green. In fact, all five

winners in the past five years have gained +0.75 strokes with the putter en route to their win.

Looking at the layout of the courses, they coincide with this approach play & putting philosophy. The course is short and demands more accuracy off of the tee,

and being a shorter course, there will be plenty of opportunities to attack pins on approach and the player with the best birdie looks will probably be winning this

event.

But, there is the potential for someone to get hot with a putter, and make a couple long ones to change the complexion of this event. The greens are massive at

Sea Island Golf Club, averaging 7,200 square feet per complex, which gives players lots of room to hit these greens and have plenty of runs at birdie.

Boring golf will be the key this weekend, the birdie opportunities will present themselves, it will come down to who is converting them.

Historical Event Status

This event made its debut on the PGA Tour in 2010 as the McGladrey Classic at the Sea Island Golf Club in Saint Simons, Georgia. The event has remained at this

location every year since, but prior to the 2015 year the event changed to The RSM Classic.

Detailed Scorecard:

Course data is a little tough to come by for this event, as they use two different courses at Sea Island Golf Club. See the course information section for a better breakdown on what to expect with these courses this weekend.

Course Information:

Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia has two different courses that are played throughout the RSM Classic. This year, the Plantation course will be used for round one, and then the rest of the event will be played on the Seaside course.

The two courses are very similar in length, the main difference between the two is that the Plantation Course is a par 72 layout, whereas the Seaside Course is a Par 70 layout. With the Plantation Course being played in round one, it gives the players at the top of the leaderboard a huge head start going into the rest of the weekend on the tougher Par 70 layout on the Seaside Course.

What’s interesting about the par 70 Seaside Course is that the Par 3's relatively easy compared to other courses on tour. Although they are fairly long, they have the seventh lowest scoring average on courses listed on DataGolf.

Throughout both courses water hazards are a feature defense, with the Seaside course having 14 holes with water in play. Players will be forced to keep the ball in the fairway, which shouldn’t come as too much of a challenge having an average fairway width of 42.8 yards.

Players Path To Victory:

Strokes Gained: Approach

With the massive fairways this weekend, this is going to put a ton of emphasis on the approach game. Along with the shorter layout, players will be hitting from comfortable numbers and will need to be sticking it close to keep up in this birdie fest this weekend.

Strokes Gained: Putting

This week, the greens are massive, averaging 7,200 square feet per green, which allows for a ton of extra birdie putts to be had, and I think you will see some of the elite putters in the field take advantage of them.

On top of that, the shorter layouts will also create a bunch more approach shots where players are attacking the pin. To win this weekend players are going to have to take advantage of all of the darts they throw to keep pace this weekend. .

First Round Scoring Average:

The first round will be played on the Plantation Course which is the par 72 layout, which has the extra two par 5’s. The par 5’s at Sea Island -0.40 strokes under par historically. Getting out to a head start in round one will be huge, as the tournament shifts to the par 70 layout in rounds two, three and four. Taking away those par 5’s and adding par 4’s will make it tough for the field to catch up if a guy can jump out to a big lead in round one, and has the potential to run away with it, with strong play in all four rounds.

The Field:

This is the last full event of 2022, before the tour takes a break in December until the new year. There are a couple more events on the calendar but one is a half field, and the other is a team format, so naturally it is a weaker field this week at the RSM Classic, but there are still a lot of interesting names in this field that have been playing very well recently.
