Pick 5: Jacob deGrom under 8.5 strikeouts(-115)
I went 0-2 yesterday when I swapped my Os pick of the day for PIT/BOS over in the first 5. And wouldn't you know it...my Os pick(Heaney over 1.5 BB) hit early. So, back to my roots today.
deGrom is probably the best starter the Orioles have faced so far this young season but, they have shown some pretty good plate discipline so far. In their L5 they have struckout 4, 6, 5 ,7, and 2 times to opposing starters. They haven't come within two Ks of going over tonight's line so far this year. The Mets #1 was effective in the strikeout dept in his first start of 2023. He notched 7 Ks but the rest of his outing was lackluster. The Rangers opening day starter only worked 3.2 innings and gave up five earned runs to a very underperforming Phillies lineup. Interesting side note - deGrom allowed as many ER to the Phillies in 3.2 innings as the rest of the Texas pitching staff gave up in the remaining 23.1 to close the series.
To add fuel to their fire, the Orioles are calling up their top pitching prospect, Grayson Rodriguez for his MLB debut tonight. My hope is that that Orioles offense gets rolling early against deGrom in support of one of the their best young arms. However, they could also be swinging for the fences to put runs on the board for Rodriguez and this bet could blow up in my face.
The Pine Bot is giving me a coin-flip if I look at deGrom's last five starts. But I like the external factors in this one so I'm locking it in. Go Os!
