This game is in a hitters park with two teams at the back end of their pitching rotations. The Pirates send Contreras who was pretty solid last year, posting a 3.79 ERA. But, he only threw a total of 8.1 innings over the entire spring so, I'm hoping he still has some rust to shake off. Nick Pivetta is on the bump for Boston. He sported a subpar 4.56 ERA in 2022 and didn't improve on those numbers this spring. In four starts he was touched up to the tune of a 6.11 ERA.
To add fuel to the fire, the 1st 5 run total in Boston's first 4 games this year have been 10, 13, 9 and 12! They have been blowing 1st 5 lines out of the water. Pittsburgh hasn't started games that hot but, their 1st 5 run lines have been 8, 5, 4...and a share of that 12. Between the two of them they are over the line or have pushed in 6 out of 7 games so far this season.
The Pine Bot is projecting Contreras for 2.1 earned runs tonight and has Pivetta at 2.4 for a total of 4.5. If we can get the top end of that before the 5th we'll at least push so I'm locking it in.
